The Future of Protective Ventilation – Improving Outcomes in Critical Care
On June 20th 2006, the first Protective Ventilation Summit was held at the secluded Haigerloch Castle near Tübingen, Germany, hosted by Novalung GmbH. Internationally leading experts in the field of pulmonary medicine, including anaesthesiologists, pulmonologists, intensivists, thoracic surgeons and experts in medical ethicss were invited to discuss in an informal atmosphere and in an interdisciplinary setting the future of protective ventilation with the goal to improve outcomes in pulmonary medicine. The introductory talk was presented by Prof. Ralf Kuhlen Aachen, focused on how to ensure survival as well as quality of life in critically ill patients with lung injury, followed by a first discussion round. Subsequently Prof. Martin McKneally from the University of Toronto presented his view on the ethical aspects on innovation in medicine. Prof. Luciano Gattinoni from the University of Milan shared his unique experience and landmark contributions in the treatment of lung injury. The final talk by Dr. Georg Matheis gave insight in Novalung’s innovative and fascinating technologies in the field of pulmonary medicine. An extended discussion of the positions and suggestions took place in an open and stimulating atmosphere. A focus of this discussion was to define outcome variables and design of clinical trials to drive clinical adaptation of extrapulmonary ventilation. The Summit closed by setting up three working groups that will develop clinical protocols for the use of the iLA Membrane Ventilator in specific patient groups. The working groups will be present their results on the second Summit, which will be held on November 7th, 2006.
