High-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) is a special form of mechanical ventilation that makes extremely protective ventilation possible, in particular in cases of hypoxaemic lung failure.
A continuous distension presure (MAP) is appiled to the closed high-flow CPAP system in the Vision α®, which prevents end-expiratory alveolar collapse and enables a targeted implementation of the open lung concept.
The increase in functional residual capacity generally results in a rapid and significant improvement in oxygenation. An electromagnetically controlled membrane creates oscillations that lead to the movement in the applied tidal volume.
In contrast to conventional mechanical ventilation the pressures in the lung during HFOV are extremely low, resulting in a gentler ventilation.
The tidal volumes are generally smaller than the anatomical dead space. The risk of inspiratory volutraume is thus reduced to a minimum.
In particular the combination of the Vision α® HFOV with the iLA Membrane Ventilator® extracorporeal artifical lung has proven itself in the treatment of severe lung failure.
